چکیده

Introduction Functional mitral regurgitation (FMR) is a ventricular disease characterized by mitral valve insufficiency in the absence of structural abnormalities of the valve leaflets or sub-valvular apparatus.1 It commonly provokes heart failure and frequently confers an increase in patient mortality and morbidity. Medical therapy has a limited role for management of FMR. When treated, FMR is currently managed exclusively through open heart surgical techniques.

Percutaneous mitral valve repair using the edge-to-edge technique: first Greek experience.

INTRODUCTION Mitral valve (MV) repair is the treatment of choice for degenerative mitral regurgitation (MR), but the surgical options for functional MR are limited. Percutaneous edge-to-edge MV repair using the MitraClip system has evolved as a new tool for the treatment of certain anatomical subsets of both functional and degenerative MR. We present the first Greek series of MV repair using th...

Selecting patients for percutaneous mitral valve therapy

Patients with severe symptomatic mitral regurgitation benefit from correction of mitral regurgitation. Surgical mitral valve repair or replacement is the current standard of care for these patients. However, high risk of surgery in many of these patients, lack of universal expertise for mitral valve repair and moderate long-term success in correcting functional mitral regurgitation are some of ...

The evolution from surgery to percutaneous mitral valve interventions: the role of the edge-to-edge technique.

The edge-to-edge technique is a versatile procedure for mitral valve repair. Its technical simplicity has been the prerequisite for the development of a number of transcatheter technologies to perform percutaneous mitral valve repair. The evolution from a standard open heart surgical to percutaneous procedure involved the application of the technique in minimally invasive robotic surgery and di...

Percutaneous mitral valve repair.

Nonsurgical treatment of clinically important mitral regurgitation (MR) has evolved tremendously over the past decade. Recent studies of percutaneous mitral valve repair procedures have shown that less invasive procedures are safe and can be effective in selected patients. MitraClip has been studied most extensively. The MitraClip is attached to the middle scallop of the mitral leaflets by a tr...

Advances in echocardiography: insights into the mitral valve and implications for surgical and percutaneous repair

Why do we need a more accurate & quantitative imaging of the mitral valve apparatus? Mitral valve (MV) prolapse, with a prevalence of approximately 2–3% [1], is the most frequent etiology of mitral regurgitation (MR) in industrialized countries [2,3]. Since the 1970s, MV repair has become preferential to replacement and, nowadays, this approach is considered the optimal surgical treatment in th...
